If you restrict discipline to direct sin against members of the church, then Christians could sin against people who aren’t apart of the assembly and no one would confront them. It must be understood that any sin—whether direct or indirect—is a sin that stains the fellowship. As the apostle Paul says in Galatians 5:9, “A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump” (cf. 1 Cor. 5:6).
